New 2-column layout option

Some people have smaller screens than others. My screen is 1440 pixels wide. Many people only have 1024 pixels to play with. Someone once commented in my blog that the centre column was too narrow. Well hopefully that's been solved now with a new layout option.

There are now two layout options: a 3-column layout, and a 2-column layout.

If you're using Firefox or Opera, simply choose "2 Columns" or "3 Columns" from the "View/Page Style" menu.

For people using other browsers; To switch, scroll down until you can see the XHTML and CSS buttons in either the right or left column. Just above the buttons, you'll see a simple statement: "Switch to 3-Col layout" or "Switch to 2-Col layout" depending on which layout you're currently looking at. Click on the statement and your layout will change instantly. If you're on Windows, you may need to reload the page to see the change.

Enjoy.

Note. The new layout does not affect the handheld layouts in any way. They will remain a simple 1-column layout.

Lovely, I like this layout better, much better!

Btw, the link#2 to "Perfume" in your Recent Projects section is dead, just so you know.

You really pay lots of effort 'upgrading' your blog. I am too lazy (and busy) to do that... appreciated.

Ailie,

yep, I've spent a lot of time working on the design of the blog. fortunately, I haven't had a lot to do over the last two weeks since Perfume finished but still there are other things that I have to do such as self-improvement: running, piano, singing, writing Chinese articles for this blog and sleeping ;-)

there is one more feature I'd like to add; link buttons next to difficult words to allow readers to jump straight over to an online dictionary so that they can learn and understand the word. I know of an English dictionary but haven't looked for an English-Chinese site yet. that's next on my list.

I'm still deciding whether to use js or inline anchors to implement the dictionary hyperlinks. (Douglas probably has a few opinions regarding this ;-)

my wife thinks the dictionary links are a great idea. I sometimes use difficult English words in my articles and being able to see an explanation quickly and easily would be great for readers.

Sapphire,

Batty's back in my comments ;-)

it took a lot of work and experimentation because I'm a perfectionist. I wanted to use the least amount of code in the html, but also wanted the text to the right of Batty's image to be vertically aligned to the middle of the image. that wasn't easy remembering that my site automatically adapts whenever people enlarge/decrease text size.

enough with the techno-details. back to life!

Greg,

Thanks for your blog enhancement. It’s awesome.

I’d like to recommend www.m-w.com to you for your blog. Not only with explanation in English and pronunciation key, this online dictionary also provides FREE audio pronunciation. At dictionary.com you have to pay for audio pronunciation service. Both explanation and pronunciation of a vocabulary are crucial to those ESL (English as a Second Language) people like us. Not everyone can follow the pronunciation key properly; so audio pronunciation is a very good tool for learning.

Welcome back to Batty! I have a question for you this time. Just for my curiosity.
Any special reason for you to name your dog #4 as Batty? According to his
character, behavior or just a name with no meaning at all. But very name/face tells a story to me. No matter dog-owners or parents. Sometimes they named their beloved one according to the character, fondness, fact and even expectation.
For example: Some parents named their daughter as Ruby just because their little girl was born in July. Ruby is the birthstone for July.
Another example: Some parents named their son as Gregory. Probably their idol is Gregory Peck, the Hollywood legendary star. (Good imagination eh? Easy guys! I was kidding. I’m afraid you and your parents are going to strangle me. Help….... ……..)

Okay, I gotta go. Have a nice weekend!

Sapphire,

at the time Batty came into our lives, two bats at separate times had flown into high wires, broken their wings and dropped to the ground. I tried to save them. I even took one of them to Kadoorie but their metabolic rates are so high that without food, they begin to digest their own musculature within hours. both bats (the 'common brown bat' by the way) died but our new dog was named Batty as a result.

I don't think Gregory Peck was my parents' idol. we all liked him but he wasn't their idol.

Gregory,

I don't have any opinion on your marvelous blog, you are now an expert on web building, CSS is not a easy tech to handle, and Thanks Microsoft who makes internet world even more complicated.

However, I do have something to say. I think people crowded here, not because they want to learn English, or looking for a fancy website, they want to see your article, so save your energy on writing rather than building.

Let youself do the best and typepad do the rest.
