Big sets, big wait
I'm currently sitting in studio 15 at TVB City. We've just had dinner and we're ready to continue filming tonight's scenes of 阿旺新傅.
Tonight's filming typifies some of the most difficult moments for an actor. The set is a fashion show involving six or seven primary actors, several supporting actors and more than thirty extras. To complicate things further, the fashion show involves twenty different sets of clothes. We've been filming for three hours and we've only filmed six sets of clothes with fourteen sets to go. It's going to be a long night.
The actor faces two problems under these circumstances. The first is boredom and consequently fatigue because of the frequent and sometimes long waits between shots. Fatigue is one of the actor's biggest enemies. When the actor tires or becomes fatigued or lethargic, acting well becomes very difficult. Great acting requires concentration and energy.
The other problem is that many non-contiguous shots are usually filmed together. It's faster this way because the lights and camera position don't have to change significantly between shots. It's a challenge for actors though because they have to maintain realism even though there's no acting prior to the shot; ie, it can be difficult to get into the mood of the moment.
We'll probably be filming until 4am while most people are sensibly sleeping in their beds, possibly with the sound of never-ending rain in the background (which by the way is one of my favourite sounds).
One last thing for you to think about. Five hours of filming this fashion show will probably produce just three or four minutes of television programming. All of tonight's filming will produce just fifteen to twenty minutes of programming. And people wonder why the industry is worried about piracy and BT!

Cool! I like that.
PS Have you try my hubby's coffee formaula yet?

Hey Greg, one of your fans is here and supporting you.
I also love the raining very much. I enjoy sitting in front of the window and watch the rain. I feel very relaxing. (Better with a cup of hot drink)
I returned from work and try to relax myself right now. My hubby and baby are sleeping in their sweet dreams.
Hope your filming will finish soon and you can go home to get some rest.

To Greg,
How to mix the three coffees evenly?
It’s simple. Buy whole bean instead of ground coffee.
For example: If you want to buy 1 lb of coffee beans in total, just ask for
½ lb of Colombian Supremo, ¼ lb of Kenya AA and ¼ lb of French Mocha.
It’s not important how many lbs of beans in total you want to buy, all you have to do just follow the ratio. Then, mix three types of beans in a container or a kraft bag and shake them well before ground.
Last but not least, if you like to add sugar to your coffee, Taikxx coffee sugar (太x咖啡糖 ) is a very good choice. Don’t forget to look for the word “unrefined” on its package since they got several types of brown sugars on the shelf. Not all brown sugars are unrefined and I’m sure you know that. Some alternatives are just white sugar plus coloring only. The one I mentioned above is a natural unrefined sugar, only go through a simpler process than refined sugar. It’s no problem for me to buy this HK brand name in our local supermarkets here in Canada. So, I believe it’s no problem for you too.
Enjoy your coffee!

Impressive! You typed and sent all these with you mobile phone!! You must be so bored during the long wait!! ;) (Just kidding!! :P)
Thanks for sharing your acting life with us as most of us don't have much idea how this is like. We just watch the "end-product" on TV and then envy the "glamourous" lives of actors and actresses. There is a lot of hard work involved, I'm sure.
What is your role in 阿旺新傳?

You're the only one foreigner who can speak Cantonese I've ever seen.. I bet you are really the only one !!
Keep going and filming more ~~ we all support you

Dear Greg,
Thanks for replying. Very glad to know that you chose to read our posts even you were tired. Actually I was imagining what was it like to sit in the studio waiting for filming, and most actors were so tired.
Hope 阿旺新傅 will be shown on TV soon. I will pay special attention to your role. ;-)

It's interesting to read about your acting and filming life at TVB =) I can't imagine how it is like for some artists to get only a couple of hours of sleep every night, sometimes they even get no sleep for a few days straight!

I'm curious as to why you chose to go to HK to pursue your acting career rather than staying in Australia. I grew up in HK, and I bet most of the "foreigner" roles were played by you. At least you have a monopoly going. :) Best of luck in your career, and breaking out of just the "foreigner" roles.

Same as many visitors who visit this web-site, honestly, although you do not have many chances to 'show off' in TVB films, I still admire your potential. I believe, one day you will success, NEVER GIVE UP!

hey Charles!!
do u mind if i use this name?i think you have a great talent and i agree of what u commented at your interview--yea--the scope is kinda small for expats in TVB or even whole of Hk entertainment industry-so why not try outside HK--go to Shanghai or Beijing-start an English School--i m sure u will do much better-( i remember another gweiloh who married a chinese wife in Beijing is doing really well there--forgot his name)
I be in HK--may be we can have coffee-serious
Bravo for being an animal lovers--i helped with the SPCA n have few dalmations at home too :-)

WoW! Can't believe it. You have loads of fans here. Oh, sorry. Just forgot to introduce myself. I'm a student 留學ing in the UK. I'll graduate very soon (in July) but still yet find a job. Struggling in finding a job at the moment. I have bought a 壹週刊 recently and have read your interview. Can't believe you have given up your study for your dream. I believe you have the quality, as I have been seeing you on screen since I was a child (I am still a child(人老心不老)). I understand it's not easy to be a foreigner, as I am a foreigner here. To get to your level is just 'Add Hard on to Hard'. I am kind of your admirer. 拍戲 is not just about 天份. In my dictionary, it is always = 60%關繫 + 20%際遇 + 15%天份 + 5% others. However, everything is up to you (人定勝天). Well, before I wrote this, I thought I had a lot to say, but when I got to this point, I just lost my words like having a brain washed. Anyway, just stop here and get back to my revision for my exam on Wednesday. When I know what I want to say, I 'll come here again. Good luck to you, Good luck to myself.
P.S If you have become a famous star in the world, do you think you would have your privacy like today?

Do you sing (karaoke)? Do you think you are good? Just record one and send it to my email please, then I can pass it to my friend's BBS(~Chinese~) to broadcast it. You may become a famous singer in the BBS 哦. Sorry for interupting your life again. Many thanks.

I studied film & TV in university and I was a production assistant some years ago, so I totally understand the complexity of the scene you mentioned!! Such complexity made everyone (both talents and crew) tired and sick. It was really difficult to boost up the mood and energy in such occasion.
Using your mobile to blog is one of your ways in maintaining your energy level in the studio, right? Wishing you everything smooth in the forthcoming shootings.
btw, I admire your Chinese writings a lot! I understand that Chinese is very difficult to learn, but you've tried your best to make friends with it (not fighting). Chinese is an interesting language. I hope you do enjoy it.

Hi Gregory,
After reading your posts, I really admire your personality and your never give up attitude. Many of the lead TVB artists may have the looks but not the talent. TVB is known to promote those with the beautiful faces, and even if you're not heavily promoted right now, it does not mean you don't have the talent. To be honest, you're the only "gwai-lo" that I know can speak such fluent catonese as well as english. Some ABC artists that grew up in the states and Canada can still barely speak proper cantonese, or even write or read cantonese. I've read osme of your other fans' post, they think you should try another company, or move to another city to pursue your career, but I think you made a right choice staying in TVB. Even though they don't heavily promote you, the vast amount of shows they broadcast around the world is an excellent medium to let others know who you are. By the way, i'm a chinese living in Canada, and many of my friends are amazed by your cantonese speaking skills, and your never give up attitude. Keep it up! Be happy for what you get, and maybe, someday, miracles will happen.

Hi Gregory,
I enjoyed reading your interview. I already knew everything about you that was in it, but it was good practice reading Chinese.
Your getting some good feedback on your blog. That's great -- I thought I'd join the community rather than e-mail you privately. Try not to go blind typing long posts into your phone. I don't want to have to lead you around the crowded streets of Hong Kong.
Mona, Angie and I had a great time watching Perfume. It was very entertaining and funny, and you were definitely the best singer.
I just got word back from the publisher I've been talking to, and they want to publish my book. I've got about 3 more weeks of school left. After that I'll be relatively free. We should get together and celebrate our successes together. I'll call you soon.
Add oil!!

hello there greg! :D wow, i never thought about the long waits in shootings! always thought that you can always sleep first then someone will just call your name if it's already your turn for the camera. anyway, just wanted to tell you that i have always been one of your fans. i grew up practically watching hk series, and more often than not, you're always there as some british, russian, or any other foreign race! i used to think that your chinese is only computer dubbed, that's why im really very surprised when i found out you actually speak fluent canto! i had always enjoyed all your performances. i think you're a great actor. keep up the good work!
by the way, i hope you're now ok with your depression. i might be wrong, but i think the best cure with depression is to speak out your feelings to your family and close friends. it's always comforting to speak to those who understand your condition. and maybe some self-help books can help you develop a more positive outlook in life.
take care and 加油! we will always support you!

hi Cherrie.
unfortunately, the word 'depression' gets confused all the time. there's depression from bad news such as losing your job or losing a family member. this is the depression that most people think of when they hear the word.
the other depression is actually the symptom of the problem, not the problem itself. the body is worked too hard. there is too much pressure. after a lengthy period of time without rest, the body runs out of juice. I call this 'nerve juice' because it's the source of all brain energy and will power. without it, you simply don't have the will to do anything. there's nothing you can do when this happens except to rest. speaking to your family won't help. speaking to a psychologist won't help. only rest and time will help. on the other hand, it's helpful if your family understands the situation and is there to support you. unfortunately, nobody understands this problem unless they've experienced it for themselves so it's really hard for family members to understand and be supportive.
I'd have to say that speaking about the problem could be helpful but only if you're speaking to others who have had the problem and have already recovered. because they've had the problem, they'll fully understand and empathise (good word). because they've recovered, they won't be negative and weigh you down with the problems they'd be experiencing if they were still going through it, and they'll give you hope because they've made it out of the dark place that is what I call 'physiological depression'.

Greg,
I feel upset when I read your message. You have been suffering from depression but hardly anyone around you can understand how you feel.
Although your fans here cannot help much, but we sincerely hope you will be able to stay away from depression from now on, and we are always here to support you.
Everyday I visit your website just hoping to hear any update news from you.

When I was still in university, I worked for TVB as a temp actor. ($100 per day with a rice box) You know, temp actors are not crucial for the drama and the major purpose is bring up a crowd in the sense. I know how painful to wait in the site, the torture of repetitive NG and finally fatigue. Some of the co-workers at that time may gamble in the site to kill the waiting time. I don't gamble myself so I just wait, walk from there to there and daydream.
I am a big fans of you since late eighties. You are so great!
Finally, I am a Mac user too.

oh! im very sorry for misunderstanding what you meant of depression! i hope you don't mind. it's just that the term is really confusing. so ehm, do you actually mean the kind of depression you're talking about is a symptom of the psychological depression? that kind of depression occurs if the body is too stressed out that you feel extremely exhausted and somewhat 'out of energy'? is that what you mean?

Just saw the scene you mentioned on 阿旺新傳. You were great.
Always know the actors spend most of their time waiting in show biz, but it was very interesting to read such a personal experience from a actor like you.
